This sculpture, Lorton Spring, is named for and dedicated to the LCAC. It was created to reflect the sense of optimism and new beginnings LCAC provides for its clients. All glass for the flowers was sourced from charity thrift shops. Some of the glass used was provided by The Attic, LCAC’s thrift shop. The Stainless Steel for this sculpture was donated by H. H. Franz, a Baltimore-based manufacturer. The sculpture rises 5’ high with a base plate measuring 8” x 11”.
The flowers quiver when touched or during a strong breeze. The sculpture is designed to be anchored to a solid foundation. In an exterior setting, this would typically be a concrete plinth. Otherwise, it may be anchored to any solid surface. Instructions for various installation options are included. Also, a stainless-steel assembly is provided for embedding in a concrete foundation.
The creators of Lorton Spring are Baltimore-based artists, Dee & Carl Byrne. The pair have developed their unique approach to creative expression through decades of art appreciation. Dee has an eye for composition and color informed through her work with photography and painting. Carl is the geek and maker for the duo. For art projects Carl draws from 40 years of lighting design, electro-mechanical design, and fabrication in many forms. In the case of Lorton Springs, Dee directed the overall design and selected the glass for the flowers. Carl sculpted the metal and built the flowers. Dee and Carl share an enjoyment of scouring thrift stores searching for interesting glass pieces. Glass from their thrift shop adventures has been converted into numerous yard flowers, light fixtures, sculptures, and trophies.
